‘Twas, the Night Before Christmas, was first published in 1823 anonymously, but then attributed to Clement Clarke Moore. Some critics acclaim that it is one of the best-known verses ever written by an American. The poem has had a significant impact on our conceptions of Santa Claus and Christmas gift giving in America. Over the generations, it has become synonymous with the anticipation that children have for the presents they are so eager to unwrap on Christmas morning. Indeed, this little rhyme is the enduring metaphor of the Christmas spirit in our culture. Read more

Have you ever felt stuck in neutral? Maybe it was a dead end job with no upside. Or did you grow up feeling trapped by living on the wrong side of the tracks? Maybe you have walked alone through the daunting challenges of being a single parent. Or has an injury, illness or tragedy put life on pause for you or a loved one?

Regardless of the specifics, many of us have faced seasons in our lives that have left us feeling stranded. Jesus of Nazareth was no different.

Mozart was composing symphonies at age 6. Beethoven was 8. Augustus was leading the Roman forces and King of the Roman empire at 18. Joan of Arc was leading the French army into battle at 17. Alexander the Great was ruling Macedon at 16, became king at 20 and had conquered most of the known world by his death at age 32. Most recently, the likes of Justin Beiber, who became a YouTube sensation at age 14 and Mark Zuckerberg who launched Facebook from his college dorm at age 19 have found success, purpose, and fortune early in life. None of these people had to wait to find their purpose after 40. Read more

Waiting: Part 3 – Chasing Butterflies

Last week my four-year-old daughter, Amelia, woke up and came running downstairs wanting to go outside and chase butterflies. I was already busy typing emails and taking work calls. However, the persistence of a little girl can be rather persuasive.

As I finally relented, it dawned on me that in a few weeks she wouldn’t be asking me to chase butterflies anymore. Instead, she would be starting pre-school. Amelia is our fourth child. Given that she is the baby of the family, I had seen this before… One minute they want to chase butterflies, the next they want to chase boys. Not wanting to miss the moment, I swooped up my little girl, and we went outside, and into the yard of our hobby farm to go hunting for butterflies.

Waiting: Part 2 – One Fateful Night in Seattle…

Picking things up from my previous post… We now found ourselves over $100,000 in debt due to our real estate investments. I had started a new job, but even though it was decent paying, it wasn’t enough. We had creditors constantly calling us because we couldn’t keep up on our bills. A couple of properties were slipping into foreclosure, and we were receiving notices from bank attorneys. In a somewhat archaic process, the bank attorneys post a legal notice on the front door of the property demanding payment, or else it will be sold on such and such date. In our case, they would be sold on the same King County courthouse steps, where only a short time ago, we had purchased properties. Things had come full circle. It was an excruciating season of waiting and the lowest point in my life.

Waiting: Part 1- Our Journey Begins…

One Saturday morning in February of 2005, I sat on the kitchen counter of our brand new townhouse in Forest Lake, MN, and talked to my wife, Terra, about moving to Seattle. I told her that I felt like God was calling us to go and be youth pastors at a church plant in the suburbs of Seattle, WA. I also had a crazy idea in my head about investing in real estate to provide for our young family. “What is the worst thing that can happen?” Answering my rhetorical question, I boldly stated: “If it doesn’t work out, we will just move back home, file bankruptcy and live in my parent’s basement. How bad can that be?” And with that decision, so began our waiting journey…

Little did I know, five years later, that would be exactly what we would have to do. Read more

Welcome to My Blog. My name is Matt Hayton and I have spent the last 12 years waiting – living what I call the “not yet life.” I’ll share more of my story in future posts.

But first I’d like to provide you with a couple of my goals for this blog:

  • To encourage people to find & pursue their purpose, while waiting.
  • To provide community for people who are in a season of waiting.

We all wait- from long lines at an amusement park and sitting in traffic (one of my least favorite types of waiting), to waiting in a hospital bed recovering from a tragic accident and, in my case, waiting while paying off $100,000+ in debt, from failed real estate investments, during the great recession.
